Step 3: The Proper Lockout Tools & Warning Devices

 

1910.147(c)(5) OSHA Lockout Device Requirements

 

LOCKOUT DEVICES MUST:

  • Be provided by the employer
  • Be standardized by size, shape or color
  • Be distinguishable from locks used for other purposes.
    Lockout locks should only be used for lockout!
  • Identify the individual who applied the lock (both tags and lock labels are acceptable for this purpose)
  • Be durable
  • Be strong enough to prevent removal except by using excessive force
  • Remain under the exclusive control of the individual who attached them.

1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(B) Standardized.
Lockout and tagout devices shall be standardized within the facility in at least one of the following criteria: Color; shape; or size; and additionally, in the case of tagout devices, print and format shall be standardized.

 

1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(A) Durable.
Lockout and tagout devices shall be capable of withstanding the environment to which they are exposed for the maximum period of time that exposure is expected.
