Brady Provides Custom Label Formats to Pharmaceutical Company

Background

A California-based pharmaceutical company with global facilities in more than 100 countries, they develop, market and support instrument-based systems, reagents, software and contract-related services to the life science industry and research community. These technologies enable biological discoveries in life science research, pharmaceutical research and development, diagnostics, forensics, food testing and agriculture.

Challenge
With various systems in more than 30,000 laboratories, this company has specialized label needs that require custom label formats. The label designs range from simple labels with static data to many that use imported variables, pick-lists and attached database variables look-up tables. All of the labels contain some form of graphic, such as their logo or the MSDS diamond.

In September 1999, two of the company's employees attended Brady Technical Support Center workshops that covered Introduction to Codesoft and Advanced Codesoft. During the workshops, they discovered that their label-making process could be simplified using Codesoft Label Design Software. At that time, they were using Corel Draw to make MSDS labels for their products, and they had to endure the tedious process of cutting and pasting everything from Corel Draw into Codesoft.

The workshop raised many questions about the feasibility, difficulty and cost of converting the current label design process from Corel Draw to Codesoft.

Solution
As a world leader in providing complete identification solutions for companies, Brady was able to step in and solve the company's specialized identification needs. Once Brady learned how it could help them significantly improve the company's labeling process, it took a leadership role in converting and developing customized label files that allowed them to convert its label-making process to Codesoft, making the process a more efficient system.

Results
Brady sent the first sample labels to this company in February 2000. Since then, Brady has completed about 300 separate label designs with printouts, which constitutes a quarter of the project. For this stage of the process, Brady will design and print a total of 1,300 labels.

This is only the beginning. This company's overall goal is to standardize globally. To begin this effort, its will be putting the label files Brady designs onto its Internet site for its other facilities to download and print. Brady has also identified future opportunities to help this company make additional improvements to its labeling process.
