5S Workplace Organization - Brady
Visual Workplace for Lean Enterprises

5S

5S is a Japanese lean methodology designed to reduce waste and optimize productivity through better workplace organization. The 5 pillars of the 5S are Sort (Seiri), Set in Order (Seiton), Shine 5S labeling(Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke). To incorporate safety into their workplace lean activities, many lean practitioners also add a sixth “S” for 5S+Safety.

Many facilities have implemented 5S as their lean visual management method for establishing and maintaining a clean, orderly work environment.

How do visuals play a role in 5S?

In 5S, visual devices like red tags, floor marking tapes, shadow boards, and shelf labels are used to ensure that there is a place for everything - and everything remains in its place after a kaizen 5S Floor Marking - Visual Workplaceevent is over.

Likewise, the Standardize and Sustain steps of 5S are virtually impossible to manage without the use of visuals such as check sheets, schedules and audits.

Visit our 5S labeling and marking section to learn how to get started with 5S visuals.
