Step 2: Equipment-Specific Visual Lockout Procedures
OSHA requires written lockout procedures for each individual piece of energized equipment.
These lockout procedures serve as a check sheet to ensure that employees completely de-energize the equipment before servicing, avoid mistakes and minimize the risk of accident or injury.
Graphical lockout procedures, which include photos, are considered best practice in the industry today, as they provide clear, visually-intuitive instructions.
They also speed up the lockout activity, which leads to reduced machinery downtime and improves operational productivity.
OSHA’s Section 1910.147(C)(4) ‘ENERGY CONTROL PROCEDURES’ lists the following requirements for written lockout procedures:
- Lockout procedures must be documented and must identify the equipment covered.
- A separate procedure must be created for each piece of equipment to be locked out. There are exceptions where multiple machines may be grouped under a single procedure.
- The procedure must include specific steps for shutting down, isolating, blocking and securing equipment to control hazardous energy.
- Specific steps for the placement, removal and transfer of lockout tagout devices should also be included.
- The employer shall conduct and certify periodic inspections at least annually.
