Brady Launches New Stair-nosing and Handrail Covers to Comply with Updated Egress Codes

New BradyGlo™ photoluminescent stair-nosing and handrail covers first to comply with 2009 IBC, IFC, NFPA 101 egress code revisions

Milwaukee, WI - (October 5, 2009) – In response to the 2009 safety standards for emergency egress, Brady Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: BRC) has introduced a new product line of Emergency Egress Marking Systems, including innovative stair-nosing and handrail covers that are the first of its kind to comply with the 2009 codes. The new products launch on October 5, 2009, the first business day of National Fire Prevention Week (October 4-11), along with a complimentary Emergency Egress Marking Handbook that explains how building owners can bring their building up to code with the new egress requirements.

New 2009 safety codes enforce additional standards for emergency egress path marking
The 2009 versions of the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC) and National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 101 Life Safety Code include new safety standards for emergency egress, including additional requirements for luminous egress path markings in all new and existing buildings with more than five stories. According to the tenth chapter of the IBC and IFC, luminous markings must now be present for all stairs, handrails, floor landings, door frames, door hardware, floor identification signs and obstacles along the egress path. A solid and continuous stripe of highly photoluminescent material must mark the full length of each step, landing edge and handrail in order to meet the code requirements.

As three of the most widely accepted safety codes in the industry, these new egress standards will affect building owners throughout the country. All 50 states have currently adopted a version of the IBC and 42 states have adopted a version of the IFC. The 2009 versions of the IBC and IFC have an expected state-by-state adoption rate of more than 60 percent by the year 2012, and will be enforced by building inspectors and fire code officials.

BradyGlo™ stair-nosing and handrail covers meet new emergency egress requirements
Brady is launching a complete line of stair-nosing, handrail covers and egress marking products that comply with the 2009 standards for egress path markings.

BradyGlo™ stair-nosing products are constructed of heavy duty plastic with an insert injection molded glow channel that has a chemical and mechanical interference fit. A durable and wear-resistant alternative to the photoluminescent marking tapes, these stair-nosing products have a built-in glow strip, ensuring it will not delaminate or peel off. Designed for high traffic areas, the BradyGlo™ stair-nosing products are available in gray, black or custom colors. A lower cost version made from recycled materials is also available for areas with less traffic.

BradyGlo™ handrail covers are similar in design to snap-on pipe markers; they snap on over the top of existing handrails. Durable and weather-resistant, the handrail covers are made of extruded polycarbonate with a co-extruded photoluminescent glow channel. They are available for round and square handrails in gray, black or custom colors, and can be permanently installed onto existing handrails with the help of an adhesive.

In addition to the stair-nosing products and handrail covers, Brady’s complete line of BradyGlo™ door hardware markers, directional arrows, and marking signs and tapes also comply with the 2009 IBC, IFC and NFPA 101 requirements. With higher illumination levels and modified product designs, these BradyGlo™ products are virtually the only egress products on the market that meet the new code requirements.

Brady offers free Emergency Egress Marking Handbook for 2009 code revisions
To help industry professionals understand the changes that need to be made regarding the means of egress, Brady has created a complimentary Emergency Egress Marking Handbook – an all-in-one, comprehensive guide to the 2009 egress safety standards and requirements. With highlighted code provisions and simplified regulation explanations, the handbook is a valuable resource for understanding how both new construction and pre-existing buildings should be modified in order to comply with the 2009 egress provisions.

Additionally, the handbook also explains how emergency egress systems can help builders earn credits for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED®) Green Building Rating System, a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. It outlines the procedures for obtaining LEED certification and informs consumers about the many incentives and cost-savings opportunities for using green emergency egress products.
