Arc Flash - Regulations and Compliance
Arc Flash is a short circuit through air that flashes over from one exposed live conductor to another, or to ground. When insulation or isolation between electrified conductors is breached, or can no longer withstand the applied voltage, an arc flash will occur.

- Safety related work practice shall be employed to prevent electrical shock
- NFPA 70E-2004
- Industry consensus standards. OSHA may use in enforcement
- ANSI / NFPA 70-2005
- Requires equipment to be in electronically safe working condition before employees can work on or be near
Why Comply?
- 5 to 10 arc flashes happen every day, resulting in 1-2 deaths. Even if the victims survive, treatment can require years of skin grafting and rehabilitation.
- Cost and consequences include:
- Thermal burns
- Years of medical treatment
