Esther Herbert
For the last 18 years, Esther Herbert has answered the phones and responded to countless customer requests at Brady Canada. However, three years before she joined Brady, Esther experienced an episode that led to her diagnosis of Bipolar.
“I locked myself in my boss’s office, sat at her desk, put my feet up and acted like I was ‘boss for the day,’” Esther recalls. “I answered her phone and would not let anyone in.” After the police were called, Esther was led away to an ambulance, which took her to the hospital where she was admitted for two weeks.
Esther has channeled her experience into being an advocate to bring about greater understanding of Bipolar. She speaks to groups, including to Brady employees, and has her own YouTube channel about the subject.
“Many people with this debilitating disorder are not able to work so I am determined to prove that someone with Bipolar can go to work every day, contribute and be a positive force in society,” says Esther. “I have always enjoyed talking with people and having that quick repartee with either the customer or my colleagues is so much fun. I get a myriad of calls a day and every one of them is unique. On the other side, having Bipolar, I also need and appreciate the structure and familiarity my position affords. Going into work feels like 'home' and that comfortable feeling is wonderful. I have stayed so long at Brady because of the incredible people I work with. I have met so many stellar, kind, funny, wonderful people and they are what I look forward to most when coming into work.
She credits her manager with playing a pivotal role in her mental health journey.
“It all started with the acceptance and support of my manager here at Brady, and that has made all the difference. I then felt more comfortable telling my colleagues about my Bipolar journey and they were equally incredible in their support and understanding. Once I became open and vulnerable, in sharing my story, there was a ripple effect and others opened up and shared their own struggles with mental illness and open dialogues started all over the workplace,” said Esther. “I encourage all of us to be approachable, be supportive and without judgment to anyone in their department that is struggling with mental disorders. We can't eradicate the stigma around mental illness until we talk about it. I talked about it and it has profoundly changed my life.”
